Hi everyone, I had the night off and figured I would write up my thoughts on the confirmed / likely roster moves in NA and EU this offseason. For the purposes of this post I will assume that the following unconfirmed roster moves WILL happen: Scrubkilla --> Mousesports (currently "possible" on Liquipedia due to inside sources) Flakes --> FC Barcelona (currently "possible" on Liquipedia due to inside sources, along with sources from Drama RLert) Mist --> Rogue (currently "possible" on Liquipedia due to inside sources) I am including these roster moves because otherwise there would only be 5 to discuss, and I think it would be fun to look at all of them. For my grading system I considered how the team might do in Season 9 if they did NOT make a roster move and compared that to how I think the team will do in Season 9 WITH the roster move. In other words, if I give a roster move a "C" that does not mean I simply think they will be an average team - it means I think the team will perform at about the same level after the roster move. My grading is as follows: S refers to an absolutely amazing roster move, A refers to a very strong roster move, B refers to a good roster move, C refers to a neutral roster move, D refers to a bad roster move, and F refers to an absolutely terrible roster move. Let's get into it! S: Amazing roster moves Funny enough, there are no roster moves that I consider to be "S" tier. I would consider an "S" roster move one that could absolutely revitalize a team, and in this offseason I do not think any are quite that drastic. In the past, I would have considered NRG picking up JSTN, along with Vitality picking up Kaydop, to be examples of S-tier roster moves. A: Very strong roster moves Mousesports: Scrubkilla replacing al0t: A+ If Mousesports get Scrubkilla then I really do believe they won the roster shuffle this offseason. Part of me hates to say that, not only because was I personally invested in the S8 Mousesports roster, but I also would have had a lot of faith in this team if they kept their roster the same. Mouse had a pretty decent Season 8, leading the league for most of the season and falling only in the final few weeks. Based on my observations of their gameplay, along with stats on, this team seemed to have a playstyle in which Speed and al0t were heavy on the offense while kuxir was more often in the back. Unfortunately al0t did not get as much value as a scorer than many other players in the league, and his individual stats at the end of the season were nothing spectacular. In my opinion, Scrubkilla could be the factor that turns Mouse into an indisputably top team in Europe. He has proven himself to be able to excel anywhere on the field - I could imagine him doing al0t's role even better or playing in a way that allows kuxir to return to his prime as a striker. This is a roster that I would be absolutely thrilled to watch every week. Ghost: Firstkiller replacing Memory: A You may be shocked that I gave an "A" to a roster move to incorporate a player with no RLCS or RLRS experience. I was a bit shocked too. But honestly, rookies just have a way of flexing and styling in their first season of RLCS. In recent seasons we've seen players like Chicago, JSTN, Alpha54, and Retals have absolutely stellar rookie seasons in RLCS, along with players like Fruity, Aztral, and Atomic excel in the RLCS with no RLCS or RLRS experience. These players have established precedence that having RLRS/RLCS experience is not a requirement to do well in RLCS. I still fully admit that this is more of a guess than any of my other assessments in this post. I know this may be a controversial topic given the recent discussion about whether 1v1 god Okhalid is "RLCS worthy" but my feeling after watching Firstkiller play for the past two years is that he is certainly RLCS worthy. One thing we can all hopefully agree on is that the dude knows how to score. Given that Memory was Ghost's primary goal scorer last season, Firstkiller could slide nicely into that role or help the team improve their playstyle altogether. RBG: Memory replacing Aeon: A- Before I say anything, the absolute last thing I want for this post is for it to incite arguments about the ethics of kicking Aeon from a newly promoted RLCS team. Those discussions have already been had and I completely understand both sides of the coin. On one hand, it is gut-wrenching for a player to promote to RLCS and get kicked (in fact, I was equally upset when it happened to Mummisnow! ) On the other hand, I can understand why a team should have the freedom to make a roster move to improve their gameplay. My feeling on the situation is that there was something wrong with the dynamic of this team. " Ever since midway through RLRS we had such a scuffed dynamic. Like honestly no matter what, it wasn't going to work. " None of us can know if the team mentality could be fixed over time and it is pointless to make an argument either way. However, I think this roster move will ultimately benefit RBG. If they did NOT make a roster move, imagine a team that finished 3rd place in RLRS now entering RLCS with internal conflict. It feels like a recipe for disaster. Outside of the supposed issues with Aeon's mentality and motivation, he was last in his team for goals per game, saves per game, shots per game, and score per game. My experience watching RLRS every week, along with the stats on, gave me the impression that Aeon was a below-average player in RLRS last season. I believe Memory coming into the team will improve the mentality, dynamic, and overall talent on RBG. Memory has consistently performed well in RLCS over the past few seasons. I can see Memory fitting into this team in many ways, as he was Ghost's top goal scorer last season but has succeeded in other roles in previous seasons. RBG can start fresh and I believe they can realistically make playoffs this season. B: Good roster moves Rogue: Mist replacing Ayyjayy: B Rogue has looked absolutely insane at times. Heck, they were the only team who could stop NRG from having a perfect season in Season 8. Rogue has also looked very weak at times. Unfortunately, in Season 8 we more often saw the Rogue that looked pretty weak. For this reason, I did not have much confidence in this roster moving into the off season, and honestly I would have considered almost any roster move to be decent at least. Rogue getting Mist would be an absolute steal, which is ironic because it was Mist's former team that kicked him in order to pick up Ayyjayy. What could Mist bring to this team? Something that many of us this sub seemed to feel during the last season is that "Mist is consistent" and "Ayyjayy is inconsistent. " I recently did a very crude analysis that supported this claim. You can almost always expect a particular level of performance from Mist, whereas this is not always the case for Ayyjayy (who finished more than one match in Season 8 without scoring a single goal). This is not to say that Ayyjayy is a bad player at all, but something just hasn't been working for Rogue. Of the 8 teams in NA RLCS, Rogue was 8th in score per game, 7th in goals per game, 7th in assists per game, 7th in saves per game, and 7th in shots per game. Ayyjayy's greatest asset to Rogue was his ability to set up plays and earn assists, but it was actually Wonder who had the most goals, saves, and shots for this team. We often think of Mist as being "the third man" but he actually had more goals and assists than Gyro in Season 8, along with having basically the same amount of saves as both of his teammates. My feeling is that Mist is a very malleable player that can excel in any role, and his presence could revitalize Rogue. C: Decent roster moves Renault Vitality: Alpha54 replacing Scrubkilla: C+ I really fell in love with the Season 7/8 Vitality roster, and after taking my personal feelings aside I have ultimately graded this as a C+ roster move. To explain my thoughts, I will describe how I felt about the previous Vitality roster versus this new roster. The former Vitality roster was undoubtedly a team with a massively high skill ceiling. Their gameplay during day 3 of RLCS S7 LAN and RLCS S8 LAN was some of the best I've ever seen. I think it is fair to say, however, that their entire run as a roster wasn't flawless the entire way. Following their win at RLCS S7, they got 5th-8th at DH Valencia, 7th-8th at Beyond the Summit, and 3rd-4th at DH Montreal. They were also just one goal away from finishing bottom 2 in this past season of RLCS. I mention these results not because I think they weren't a top-level team, but because I feel this team has not reached a level of dominance like the old Dignitas roster (absolutely dominating their region, multiple consecutive grand finals appearances) or Cloud9 (finishing top 4 at MANY LANs in a row). In other words, despite this team having an unbelievably skill ceiling, they were not always able to reach that potential. You may be thinking that I am being too harsh on Vitality, but believe me when I say I was 100% in support of their former roster. I consider Alpha54 to be one of the best players in Rocket League yet I am giving his move to this roster only a C+. Hopefully that speaks to how much faith I had in Vitality! I have mixed feelings about Alpha54 joining because Scrubkilla is a one-of-a-kind player. Let's start with the facts: Alpha54 has been at the top of the stats for two consecutive seasons of RLCS. He had the highest score per game despite his team finishing in the bottom 2, which I believe is a first for any season of RLCS. But Alpha's indisputably great individual performance begs the question: does he outclass his teammates because he's just that good, or does his playstyle cause his teammates to play worse? We saw Bluey shine this season of RLCS and become the EU MVP after Alpha left FCB. The big question is whether Alpha's raw talent will build upon the talent of Kaydop and Fairy to create a superstar team, or if deeper factors will come into play and the team will underperform. I don't intend to answer these questions, but I still think they're interesting to consider. It's worth bringing up the fact that Kaydop and Fairy supposedly brought in Alpha in order to have an all-French roster. Ethics aside, my gut instinct is that this will strengthen the team. With the insane amount of raw talent on this roster, along with their ability to speak comfortably and casually with each other, I expect that they will have a very solid season. TSM: Mognus replacing Alpha54: C Despite TSM having pretty good team stats last season, they really had trouble actually winning. If we consider just the numbers, Alpha was a beast (of all 24 players in EU RLCS, he was 1st in% of team score, 3rd in% of team goals scores, 4th in% of team saves, and 1st in% of team shots). However, Remkoe and Metsanauris had arguably their worst seasons of RLCS, and the team ultimately finished in the bottom 2. The team also had a relatively weak performance at DH Montreal before the season, failing to make day 3. Something wasn't clicking for TSM despite the talent being there. My first instinct upon hearing that Alpha was leaving TSM was "Wow, TSM are screwed next season. " As I thought about it more, though, I became a little more optimistic, especially upon hearing that Mognus was joining. You have to imagine that this was an intentional decision by TSM, as they presumably could have picked up several other talented free agents like Bluey. While keeping my immensely positive emotions aside when I think about Mognus and Metsanauris reuniting, I do have faith that their previous success together and genuine friendship can help the team. Part of me still feels like they could easily finish bottom 2, but considering that's where they ended up this season with Alpha, I ended up giving this roster move a C. I am keeping my fingers crossed for them though. Pittsburgh Knights: Ayyjayy replacing Mist: C- Pittsburgh Knights are a hungry team and I can respect their desire to improve even after a very successful season of RLCS. On the other hand, something about this roster move just doesn't sit right with me. While I rate it a C- I predict that it will realistically end up being an A or an F. Pittsburgh Knights were a great team with Mist. They narrowly missed a top 2 finish in NA, they did claim their top 2 status in the regional championship. They made day 3 of RLCS S8 LAN and lost to Vitality, the eventual runners-up. This all took place after their FIRST season of RLCS (and did I mention that they won DH Montreal shortly before that? ). Despite Mist commonly being known as the third man of that team, I think it's difficult to state his role on the team so clearly. He didn't really shine or look particularly bad in any stat for RLCS S8, which may be one reason that he's known to be just a solid player. One thing that Ayyjayy could bring to this squad is a new offensive presence. Pittsburgh Knights were an assist-heavy team last season, and they had the 2nd most assists/goal (only behind G2). Based on this stat, along with the fact that no one player carried all of the weight in any stat, it seems that at least some of Pittsburgh Knight's success was due do all players being involved in setting each other up for goals. I currently don't have any stats regarding demos, but I'm sure we all remember how critical those were for the PK offense. However, we have seen teams succeed also by having players who can make miracles happen with solo play (such as Squishy during the C9 vs. Ghost matchup last season, or JSTN's numerous impressive solo plays like his demo against Vitality in Game 7 of the grand finals). We rarely saw PK make these solo plays, and perhaps Ayyjayy can add a mechanical flair to the team that can make their offense even stronger. As I mentioned before, I see this team being either amazing or sub-par next season. I think sticking with Mist would have likely guaranteed another successful season, and right now I think taking on Ayyjayy is a gamble that won't completely pay off. D: Bad roster moves FC Barcelona: Flakes replacing Bluey: D+ The context by which Bluey was kicked from FC Barcelona still remains a mystery, but I still question the decision to kick the MVP of your region. I consider FC Barcelona to be one of the best teams that did not make LAN in any season of RLCS and I still wonder what kind of damage this team could have done. Something that made this team shine was their ability to score. Of the 24 players in EU RLCS, Ronaky was 1st in goals per game, Deevo was 1st in assists per game, and Bluey was top 3 in both of those categories as well. A team that is so strong on offense inherently has a ton of potential, and we certainly saw moments of that potential during RLCS. Their 3 league play wins were all 3-0 sweeps, and 3 of their 4 league play losses were only by one game. They were also eliminated in playoffs in a game 7 against Dignitas. In all of this, Bluey's role in this team's success cannot be understated. To us fans, we can only speculate the conditions on the team that led them to kick Bluey. One could imagine that kicking such a talented player must have been due to serious issues behind the scenes. Regardless of these reasons, the fact that they are bringing in Flakes to replace Bluey makes me less confident in their potential for success. Flakes had a solid individual performance in RLCS S8 and achieved day 3 finishes in DH Valencia and DH Dallas. He also certainly has potential to match Bluey's offensive performance (as Flakes was the only player in NA or EU last season to score more than 50% of his team's goals). Despite these stats, I do not see Flakes as big of a star player that would make this roster move worthwhile. This is probably a good time to mention once again that I am just a fan who has NO clue what goes on behind the scenes in these teams. For that reason, I completely acknowledge that these are just my opinions and I would not at all be surprised if my predictions for these teams get turned upside down early on next season. Like the Kennedy assassinations, the Rabin assassination is surrounded by a lot of unanswered questions. But this dramatization adheres closely to the accepted theory of Yigal Amir as lone killer. The English-language title, Incitement" unlike the Hebrew title) hints at the tirelessly repeated accusations that the political right in general, and Bibi Netanyahu in particular, stirred up the deadly animus against Rabin. However, the movie makes a point of accurately showing a couple of incidents that the accusations commonly distort. It shows that a particularly nasty poster of Rabin (dressing him in an SS uniform) was distributed by agent provocateur Avishai Raviv and wasn't really a poster at all but a handbill; and it shows that a coffin carried in an anti-Oslo demonstration was not a symbol threatening Rabin with death but a symbol lamenting the supposed death of Zionism. Where the depiction does go overboard, I'd say, is in emphasizing the tacit support by the religious establishment for an attack on Rabin. Bar-Ilan University, which has a Jewish religious atmosphere but also has secular Jewish students and even Arab students, is portrayed as entirely religious and plastered with anti-Rabin posters on every wall. Rabbis are shown one after another stopping short of disapproval with respect to Amir's intention to kill Rabin.
Despite not spending important time bashing Bibi, the movie does bother at the end to grumble that when he took office, his inaugural speech didn't mention Rabin.
But how is the movie as a movie? you ask. Apart from stating its point of view on the murder (and being released in Israel half a week before an election) it doesn't seem to have much of a message. As an exercise in recreating episodes that are only 25 years old and well remembered from the news, it works well. It blends recreations with authentic footage elegantly. The filmmakers did not employ well-known actors who would have made disbelief difficult to suspend, but the actors handle their parts well. The music is spare and appropriately ominous. But if the movie breaks forth from its narrow focus to imply any larger statement about the human condition, I missed it.
